lm 20. Jahrhundert entstand eine eigenständige neuseeländische Nationalliteratur, deren Stilrichtungen und Themen die Veränderungen in der Kultur und Gesellschaft als Ganzes reflektierten. lm 21. Jahrhundert werden diese Grundlagen sowohl der Literatur als auch der Nationalidentität zum Teil erschüttert und auch zurückgewiesen. Die Frage, was es heute bedeutet, ein Neuseeländer/eine Neuseeländerin zu sein, verlangt andere Antworten als noch vor einigen Jahrzehnten. Die zu- nehmende Globalisierung der letzten Jahre hat Neuseeland ebenso beeinflusst wie sie auch neuseeländische Kunst und Kultur stärker international bekannt gemacht hat. Viele neuseeländische Autorinnen haben im Ausland gelebt oder leben noch dort und schreiben über Themen, die außerhalb Neuseelands liegen. Die Einladung als Gastland zur Frankfurter Buchmesse 2012 ist eine Chance, die ganze Bandbreite der neuseeländischen Literaturproduktion zu präsentieren. Und auch wir möchten mit dieser Publikation mehr Aufmerksamkeit auf Neuseelands Literatur lenken. Drei neuseeländische Autorinnen – Bill Manhire, Hinemoana Baker und Hamish Clayton – werden aus ihren Werken bei einer Literaturveranstaltung im Oktober 2012 dem Wiener Publikum vorlesen. Informationen zu ihnen und Werkauszüge plus ein Einleitungsartikel zur Literatur Neuseelands im 21. Jahrhundert und die persönlichen Erinnerungen einer Buchhändlerin, die 35 Jahre lang eine der bestsortierten Buchhandlungen in Auckland geleitet hat, bilden den Inhalt dieses Pazifik Dossiers.
New Zealand Literature
The twentieth century saw the building of a national literature in New Zealand, with its styles and emphases reflecting the changes in the national culture and society at large. ln the twenty-first century, many of these past foundations of both literary and national identity have been challenged or even rejected. The question of what it means to be a New Zealander today has different answers from those in earlier eras. Congruently, the increasing global mobility of recent years has dually brought globalisation to this small corner of the world and made New Zealand’s culture more available internationally. Many New Zealand writers live or have lived abroad and write about international issues and themes. The invitation as special guests at the 2012 Frankfurt Book Fair is a chance to showcase the great range of contemporary New Zealand writing. We try to support and encourage a new and wider readership for New Zealand literature with this publication and a reading event introducing Bill Manhire, Hinemoana Baker and Hamish Clayton to the audience in Vienna. Selected writings of these three New Zealand authors – along with an overview of New Zealand literature in the twenty-first century and the personal memories of an Auckland bookseller for thirty-five years form the content of this special Pazifik Dossier.
