The English discoverer, navigator and cartographer James Cook(1728-1779) can be seen as the cause but not the subject of thisdossier. The comprised articles communicate a lot about theperception of that period’s travellers of the seemingly “new world” –Oceania. They also illustrate the links of those actions to thepresence. The dossier “Around James Cook” presents first of all JohnWebber, one of Cook’s travel companions, whose life was processedby the writer Lukas Hartmann in his novel „Bis ans Ende der Meere.Die Reise des Malers John Webber“ [“Till the End of the Seas. TheJourney of the Painter John Webber”] (Diogenes 2009). It depicts theyoung artist John Webber, who, being a painter, had to document thethird voyage of Captain James Cook (1776-1780) and the ways inwhich he encountered this “new world”. Jennifer Newell on the otherhand analyses the contact between the European “discoverers” andthe indigenous people focusing on the introduction and seizure ofthen new animal and plant species. In this respect she mentions thewide interests of the Europeans as well as those of the Pacificislanders. Trade and exchange had and still have a great impact on asmall scale; even goats can give rise to serious conflicts.
