The Pleiades are an open star cluster in constellation Taurus. Star myths about this asterism are found in the mythologies of many cultures around the world. Classic example is the Greek myth about seven sisters, daughters of Atlas and Pleione. The story of the Lost Pleiad is also well known. The lecture will focus on analysis of the myths of the Pleiades in Polynesian mythological systems, their common motifs and their names in the various Polynesian languages.
The results of the presented research will be part of the dissertation thesis Analysis of cosmogonic myth of Oceania. Finding a common heritage.
Petra Žaludová is a PhD. student in the study programme General History at the Faculty of Arts, Comenius University in Bratislava. Her studies are carried out in an external educational institution, at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the SAS. Her research focuses on the mythology of Oceania.
